Statement
The
Michigan Reading Association is a dynamic and diverse organization
whose mission is to promote literacy.
Belief
Statements
Reading is the key to learning.
Everyone has the responsibility to promote literacy.
Diversity contributes to understanding and positive social action.
Literacy practice and policy demand knowledgeable decision makers.
Goals
and Objectives
Goal I: Promote MRA as a literacy organization
that leads in developing, supporting, and communicating an
evolving definition of literacy.
Objective 1: Promote the MRA mission, goals and objectives.
Goal
II: Maintain a consistent, proactive voice in literacy and
educational policy-making issues.
Objective 1: Promote MRA positions in regard to literacy
and educational issues.
Objective 2: Encourage MRA members to become actively
involved in state and national literacy and education issues.

III: Support and disseminate research on, as well as application
of, the best curriculum, instructional, and assessment practices
for literacy development.
Objective 1: Encourage teachers to conduct action research
and share their results.
Objective 2: Identify and disseminate research implications
for educators.

IV: Provide accessible professional development.
Objective 1: Provide additional opportunities for professional
development inservices other than the annual conference.
Objective 2: Identify and develop uses of technology to
promote professional development.

V: Establish collaboration, networking, and partnerships among
MRA Board membership and various other organizations.
Objective 1: Expand communication within MRA.
Objective 2: Identify and develop uses of technology to
promote professional development.

VI: Engage the larger community including students, parents
and other agencies in literacy activities on advocacy.
Objective 1: Develop and establish communication channels
that match the literacy needs of the communities to their
available resources.

VII: Actively support the efforts of councils, maintaining
strong ties with them and the International Reading Association.
Objective 1: Provide an effective information system to
councils to promote MRA grants, recruit new members, and
provide for professional development ideas.

VIII: Maintain continuous improvement by providing leadership
for councils, members, and others in the learning community.
Objective 1: Provide local councils with assistance in
attaining MRA and IRA Honor Council status.
Objective 2: Ensure that the board of directors is composed
of capable leaders.
Objective 3: Ensure diversity of composition of the Board
of Directors.
Objective 4: Ensure responsible fiscal management.
